It wasn’t the occult that drew me to Transylvania. It was a cookbook.

I’ve never read any of the "Twilight" series, nor a single word of an Anne Rice novel (though a friend did persuade me to see the film version of "Interview With the Vampire" when it was released in 1994).

The city of Sibiu in Romania has been described as Prague without the tourists. Named European City of Culture in 2007 this Translyvanian gem is filled with art, churches, cobbled piazzas and Medieval archways.

Convinced that Romania was a land of sadness and misfortune, I made a two-day stopover in Sibiu to take advantage of a weekend opportunity to visit the book fair hosted by the Transylvanian city with its German pedigree and German name: Hermannstadt.

In the heart of Transylvania lies Sibiu, an important but little known city of 160,000. Outside Romania, Transylvania is best known as the sinister setting of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.
