The collection of European paintings belonging to Baron Samuel von Brukenthal includes a number of approximately 1200 works belonging to the main European schools of painting from the 15th to the 18th century.

The Flemish and Dutch schools are represented by great masters or masters with a smaller visibility formed in the renowned centers of painting in Anvers, Bruselles, Gant, Bruges, Amsterdam, Leida, Utrecht.

The German and Austrian school, displaying 430 paintings, includes together with illustrious names of the late German Renaissance such as Lucas Cranach the Old or Schwab von Wertinger, numerous works of the painters belonging to the 17th and 18th century.

The Italian school of painting, although represented by a relatively small number of works compared with the other schools (around 200 canvases), has an important weight due to the presence of renowned artists: Alessandro Botticelli, Tullio Lombardo, Tiziano Vecellio, Paris Bordone, Sebastiano Ricci, Alessandro Magnasco. The Venice, Genoa and Naples schools remain representative.

The stamp cabinet

Engraving works of art of a European origin present in the Brukenthal collection are signed by Albrecht Dűrer, Marcantonio Raimondi, Agostino Carracci, Hendrick Goltzius, Egidius Sadeler, Boetius and Schelte Bolswert, Cornelis Galle, Lucas Vorsterman, Jan Saenredam, Cornelis Bloemaert, Jacques Callot, Antoine Masson, Claude Mellan, Robert Nanteuil, Giambattista Piranesi, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. In 1834 a number of 160 stamps were added to the European engravings collection, having been purchased from painter Franz Neuhauser, followed by other acquisitions and donations during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Transylvanian collection of graphics reuniting over 3000 drawings, watercolors and engravings, is an important source of documentation in what concerns the historical and cultural events of Transylvania during the 18th and the 19th centuries. Important acquisitions and donations during the second half of the 20th century enriched the stamp collection with works belonging to masters of Romanian art such as Theodor Aman, Ştefan Luchian, Theodor Pallady, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Nicolae Tonitza. A significant fund of drawings and engravings belonging to contemporaneous artists was recorded.

The Romanian Art Gallery

The National Art Collection has its origins in the works purchased by the curators of the Brukenthal Museum during the 19th century, which showed a particular interest in the local artistic accomplishments as well. It comprises paintings, graphics, sculpture, furniture, silverware, porcelain, glass works etc. dating from the 15th

century and until the present. We mention among the authors: Franz Neuhauser, Theodor Benedikt Sockl, Theodor Glatz, Heinrich Trenk, Mişu Popp, Carl Dörschlag, Arthur Coulin, Robert Wellmann, Fritz Schullerus, Octavian Smigelschi, Emerich Tamás, Friedrich Miess, Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodor Pallady, Alexandru Ciucurencu, Hans Mattis Teutsch and Corneliu Baba.

The decorative art collection

The Brukenthal Museum holds an important decorative art collection comprising altars, sculptures, lay and religious silverware (dating from the 15th century to the 18th century), glassware, oriental carpets and furniture, items of a special artistic value, their style and technique proving their origin in the Central-European space.

The Brukenthal Library

Over the years, the book collection purchased by Baron Brukenthal (15.972 volumes) incorporated other collections, among which we mention: the chapel library (incorporated in 1879), founded as early as the 14th century and comprising the library of the Dominican monastery and the library of a series of patrician families in Sibiu. Due to this fusion, the number of incunabulum increased from 76 to 356. Later on the library incorporated the book patrimony of the Evangelic parish, of the Academy of Law and a series of donations from individual persons and scientific institutions from the country and from abroad. The total number of volumes reaches 280000, of which 442 titles representing incunabula grouped in 382 volumes.

Messieursdames,
eine Frage: 1911/12 sollte ein Jan van Eyk Gemälde verkauft werden, um eine Moderne Galerie zu schaffen. Ist dieser Verkauf tatsächlich erfolgt? Vgl Karpaten, 1912
Besten Dank für Ihre Antwort
