1981 in a chic Romanian style villa which belonged to colonel Spiess, a hunter himself, an authority in the field, who held for many years the position of Master Hunter of the Royal House.
The colonel was a renowned hunter, mentioned in the international yearbooks for hunting and he participated in a long safari in Africa from where he brought back extremely valuable items which are now part of the collection of the Museum of Hunting.
At the present, the museum’s patrimony includes 1.577 exhibits, some of them over 100 years old, purchased by collectors or coming from donations mainly accumulated starting with the end of the 19th century, from three important collections: “August von Spiess”, “Emil Witting” and “The Collection of the Sibiu Association of Natural Sciences in Ardeal”.
The museum tour opens with a landscape of hunting tools and weapons, the second hall introduces the visitors into the world of the hunting avifauna and hall number three is reserved to big game. The last hall displays African hunting trophies.
The exhibition reflects the evolution of hunting tools and weapons over time and highlights the variety of the game in our country as well as its high quality, trophies which obtained numerous medals within exhibitions organized in the country and abroad.
The Museum was restored and reorganized in 2006 and 2007, being reopened to the public on February 25th, 2007 under the name of “August von Spiess” Museum of Hunting.
