The foundation of the museum was laid in 1849 by means of the foundation of the Sibiu Association of Natural Sciences in Ardeal (Siebenbürgischer Verein für Naturwiessenschaften), its members being important personalities of the scientific and cultural life at a national and international level.
The headquarters of the Sibiu Association of Natural Sciences in Ardeal was built by C.W. Friedrich Maetz, an architect from Cluj, and it was inaugurated in a festive ceremony on May 25th, 1895.
The building is situated in the area between the third (demolished) and fourth precinct. The main façade, of a Neo-classic conformation presents a colonnade with four Ionic columns over which a balcony with a handrail is placed. Three rectangular doors placed on a semicircular discharge arch provided with an arch key in the shape of a volute open towards the balcony. The three axes are separated by four adjoining Corinthian columns which sustain an entablement with a border on which the number MDCCCXCIV (1894) is written.
The collections of the museum sum up to a total of 1100000 exhibits from the field of geology, paleontology, botany and zoology, which places the museum, from this point of view, on the second place in the national network in the domain..
The most modern exhibition of natural history in Romania was inaugurated on December 21st, 2007 in the presence of the minister of culture Adrian Iorgulescu, the mayor of the city of Sibiu, Klaus Werner Iohannis and the prefect of the county of Sibiu, Ioan Mitea.
From a thematic point of view, the exhibition preserved its systematic character, presenting the main animal groups in their phylogenetic evolution. The adopted scenography of the presentation and the museum technical solutions are innovative. Thus, in the new configuration a special attention was paid to the dioramic presentation, the exhibits being placed in displays reproducing the habitat of each animal within an ecosystem. The number of exhibits was reduced but without affecting their diversity. The administrators made use of a larger quantity of complementary materials, that is explanatory texts, static and moving images. The selection of all the materials incorporated in the papier-mâché was made based on the compatibility criteria and the quality of the microclimate of the exhibition sector is ensured by a general air conditioning.
