The building hosting the museum is an important monument of gothic architecture, its nucleus being the house of Mayor Thomas Altemberger. The building was erected at the end of the 15th century and represents the largest civilian gothic ensemble in Romania.
The essential (permanent) exhibition of the Brukenthal National Museum – The Altemberger House Museum of History, was completely reorganized and comprises at the present the following sections:
 “The evolution of the human communities in southern Transylvania” – 1st floor, halls 1-8; this exhibition is mainly based on the habitat elements from southern Transylvania, starting with the Paleolithic until the Middle Ages.
 The Neolithic habitat is reconstituted in halls nos. 2 and 3, presenting a Starčevo-Criş hut, a stone carving workshop and a dwelling from the Vinča area of culture, with the relevant inventory
 Hall no. 4 is dedicated to the bronze era, using papier-mâché imitations of the elements which generate a unique presentation of the artifacts;
 The Dacian era is presented in hall no. 5, using archeological materials discovered mainly in the fortress of Tilişca-Căţănaş;
 A Dacian sanctuary is recreated in hall no. 6, visitors being invited to stroll through it
 Using as a model the Roman dwelling (villa rustica) in Apoldu de Sus – Levejoare, researched by Nicolae Branga between 1975 and 1978, its composing elements were recreated by imitation in papier-mâché in hall no. 7, consisting of the main living quarters, the household adjoining facilities, the observation tower and the courtyard
 Finally, the inside of a medieval home is presented in the last hall – hall no. 8 – of this exhibition section (the tower dwelling, 1st floor), the allocated space being representative (furnished with a fireplace, coats of arms, a central pole and a bow window), resulting in an indubitably exceptional exhibition setting.
For this entire exhibition section – with the exception of the last hall – the reconstituted items are protected by polyester walls and all the lighting devices (optic fiber) are artificial and are situated out of the visual filed of the visitors. LCD screens are placed at the entry of every hall, clearly individualized according to the respective habitat.
