ȘAGUNA, Andrei

1809-1873

Vicar in 1846, bishop in 1848, metropolitan between 1864 - 1873.
Founded the Metropolitan See of Transylvania and the first Theological Institute in Romanian.
Saguna also set up a diocesan printing house in Sibiu (1850), still existent today, where he printed almost all the books of service, didactic text books, historical books and of some other kind, too, such as The Romanian Telegraph, that has been published from 1853 until today.
In 1861 he was one of the founders of the Transylvanian Association for the Culture and Literature of the Romanian People in Transylvania (Astra), having been its first president
